Using blogs in math

I could see myself using a blog when teaching geometry to assign projects and things.  Since my thematic unit is about buildings and arcitecture I could assign the students a project to go online and find information about a specific building.  Then they could go to their blog and write what they have found or they can make a comment about the information they have found on my page.  Also, this would help to post some of the websites I found with geometry and the students can read my blog and go to those websites.  I think blogs can be used in all subjects and it is a great way to get the students engaged in a topic.  Students love to use technology so using a blog will motivate them to do an assignment.

I am a Senior at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.  My major is in elementary education and I am minoring in mathematics.  I graduated high school from Appleton North.  My first year of college I went to Northern Michigan University.  Then came back to Wisconsin.

I was born in Las Vegas because my father was in the Air Force.  Then we moved to Upper Michigan when I was two.  I have one older sister and one younger sister, who are my best friends.  I moved to Appleton when I was a Sophomore in high school.  After I moved I was in a long distance relationship.  Surprisingly I married my high school sweetheart just last August.

I love the outdoors.  Kayaking is probably my most enjoyable sport.  I try to golf, but I’m not that good at it.  This summer I hope to buy a tent and go camping.  I’m not a fan of the winter, there isn’t a whole lot of winter sports I like.  I love going to Brewers and Packer games!  Overall, I enjoy being outdoors and trying new things!

There are a few ways I have thought of that math teachers can use blogs.

  1. They can post assignments or reminders about what assignments are due
  2. They can post information about what the students have learned about in class, this can be used to help the students who missed class and also refresh the information for the students who were there but may have not fully understood it.
  3. They can also post helpful websites related to the topic they are talking about in class.  This way students can go in and explore on their own.
  4. Math teachers can use this to post extra homework problems that students can work on if they are struggling and need a little extra practice.
  5. This is a great way for students to communicate with the teacher as well.  The teacher can post the information and the students can comment about it and the teacher can answer their questions about a particular topic.
